Domain Name Registration

A domain name is like your address on the internet. A domain name (e.g. yourname.co.uk) can be used for your website (e.g. www.yourname.co.uk) and your e-mail addresses (e.g. bill@yourname.co.uk, sales@yourname.co.uk). Domain names can be prized possessions, and you would be well advised to register your desired name as quickly as possible, even if your website is not yet ready. If someone else beats you to registering your preferred name, there is usually little you can do about it.

Domain names must be registered under a particular domain extension (e.g. .co.uk or .com). If your preferred name is not available under one extension, try some others - you may have better luck. Ideal domain names are short, memorable and closely related to your business or group name.

Notes: Although many of the domains were created for the intended use by a particular type of organisation or geographical area, there are no restrictions on registering names under any of the above domains with the following exceptions:

[1] .me.uk and .name domains may only be registered by natural persons (i.e. not by companies, organisations, agents, etc.).
[2] .eu domains may only be registered by either: a company with its registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the EU, an organisation established within the EU, or a natural person resident within the EU.
[3] .mobi domains may only be registered for websites adhering to mobile compatability style guidelines known as Switch On! Guides.
[4] .cc and .tv are the country code domains for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Tuvulu, respectively, however there are no restrictions on their use and they are commonly used for e-mail and television related websites.
